Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

It's NOT wrong, but the OP was specifically discussing alto players...

so to bring a tenor player to the discussion just confuses and broadens the discussion and diffuses it. Sure there is overlap between the horns, but any player worth serious discussion and who has made their mark on an instrument has done so with one specific type horn. Certainly here are exceptions (Wayne Shorter, Coltrane, Rashaan Roland Kirk, et al) but the INDIVIDUAL voice of a musician is the absolute key to the magic of jazz and that indvidual's axe choice is key to their distinctive voice and personal expression.

So you don't hear much discussion about Charlie Parker's tenor attributes, Sonny Rollins soprano works, Duke Ellington's organ works OR Stan Getz' alto playing. All instruments these pros could find their way around, but NOT how they chose to define themselves as musicians OR how they made their mark upon the music canon.
