I think this recent Rachmaninoff Second Concerto recording (Lazic/Petrenko/LPO on Channel Classics) is better than most at preserving a realistic balance between soloist and orchestra. Despite the compromises necessary for concert recording, I thought the overall sound was very impressive and realistic, especially in SACD multichannel. Also, the interpretation is original and (IMHO) valid - this has definitely been a keeper for me. The solo pieces (Moments musicaux) are recorded in the studio, and are even better as far as realism is concerned.
In terms of tone quality, my favorite piano recordings are DVD-Audios: the Messiaen "Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus" with Aimard on Teldec (there is also a regular CD incarnation of this), and the Debussy Preludes with Koroliov on Tacet. I admit the latter choice is not realistic in terms of instrumental placement (with the piano keyboard spreading 270 degrees around you in multichannel!), but in terms of timbrel capture, it's pretty much state of the art IMHO!
