Is there a favorite you would like to pack off to the kingdom for prosperity, and to play a lot, you bet yer damn skippy? A desert island pick? One, ok, maybe two. I'm a freak for Keystone 3 (Concord Jazz) and Free For All (Blue Note). The young turks that compose the Jazz Messengers on the former are-
Wynton and Branford Marsalis
Bill Pierce
Donald Brown
Charles Fambrough
and on the latter-
Freddie Hubbard
Wayne Shorter
Curtis Fuller
Cedar Walton
Reggie Workman.
The recordings couldn't be more different from one another. The CJ is lighter and breathtakingly creative. Blakey plays like a kid! The engineers did a very fine job of capturing its liveness. The BN is bolder sounding ala Rudy Van Gelder with intense solos from Hubbard and Shorter (on the title track Shorter feels like he can'r help but go for extra choruses).
There, those are two dynamite and favorite performances from me. I was introduced to The Jazz Messengers on Moanin. Maybe you, too, and I know we love it. Lord knows there are a lot of AB albums to pick from. Pick one or a couple albums. Thanks.
