When I was much younger I had similar questions. Years of training and listening and conducting answered many, if not all, of those questions.
Classical music is just that; proven over the years and written in the classical style.
Agreed that much of the music played on radio is overdone, that is no reason to deny it's importance. I love to hear new pieces each day but that doesn't cramp my enjoyment of familiar ones. We all have a dial or remote to pass on to another piece.
As for diminishing the importance of composers such as Webber, that could be a whole other matter. Over the years Gershwin, Kern, Lehar and other composers of "lighter" music have met with the same dismissal. I don't share that opinion at all!
