Listening to music is a "penetrative act." To finally "get" a melody is to internalize it; ride it.
It's one thing to "ride" a wave of orchestral sound, because it's still comfortably and relatively abstract, but for a man to ride a woman's voice--as nakedly-produced and emotional as it is in opera--can be uncomfortable. IMHO, the rejection of the melodic component was taken to its extreme in some "Rap" music which featured rhythm and harmony alone.
Then there's a hodge-podge of (generalized) reasons that some men can handle Opera better than others: Cultural: men from Latin and Eastern European countries are more overtly emotional so that the jump to opera isn't so pronounced. In competitive Capitalist systems and in Bureaucracies, stoicism in men is rewarded; this behavior is taken home and thus the (sometimes) histrionics of Opera is too jolting.
There are probably a million exceptions, everyone's different, but just wanted to offer something to chew on....
