Here is a nice discovery: Robert Fuchs string quartets opus 58 & 62 on MDG. Fuchs was a late 19th/ early 20th century German composer who was thoroughly behind the times. These quartets harken back to the romantic era, almost as far back as the end of the classical era. They have more Brahms and Beethoven, even Mozart, in them than any modern influences. The MDG recording is superb.
I also enjoy the recording of his piano concerto on Hyperion, paired with that of Kiel, for the same reasons.
If you're in the mood for sonorous, inventive, romantic music, Fuchs is an excellent but little known candidate.
Peace,
Tom E
