I learned about classical music, and took lessons on an instrument, because my parents thought that it was important. We had an orchestra, and I was in it - but there was a real disconnect, because the school never used it as an opportunity to teach *about* music.
No one should expect the public schools to act in loco parentis. Like Raiderman, I'm happy if they can successfully teach people how to read, write, perform basic mathematical functions, and begin to teach them to think critically.
