Which Pat Metheny?

There are at least four:

1. Pat Metheny Group: Here, Pat is playing with an established band. He has collaborated with keyboard man Lyle Mays since 1978, with bassist Steve Rodby since 1982 or so, and with drummer Paul Wertico since 1983, so this is a tight ensemble. I favor the live "The Road to You" as an introduction to this band. The recent "Imaginary Day" is incendiary. "Pat Metheny Group" (1978) and "American Garage" (1979) are classics, featuring Danny Gottlieb on drums and Mark Egan on bass.

2. Pat Metheny as a solo artist: This is where Metheny takes the most risks. Best bet is probably "Secret Story," but "New Chautauqua" has value also. Avoid "Zero Tolerance for Silence" unless you're extremely adventurous or a completist.

3. Pat Metheny as a collaborator: The obvious choice here is "Beyond the Missouri Sky" with Charlie Haden. Other good choices are "I Can See Your House From Here" with John Scofield and "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls" with Lyle Mays. The new one with Jim Hall is also promising.

4. Pat Metheny as a guest: I think the best bet here is Marc Johnson's "The Sound of Summer Running," which features some splendid interplay with Bill Frisell. Joshua Redman's "Wish" shows Metheny to very good effect. And Gary Thomas's "Till We Have Faces" is a terrific and under-recognized record.

Happy hunting.
