Of course, this is a generalization.
Usually their early work tends to be a little more raw, and under-developed.
Then in their middle period, they hit their stride and it all comes together.
After that, there is a decline.
The Beatles are a good example - their strongest stuff, IMO, is "Rubber Soul", "Revolver", "Sgt. Pepper" and "Abbey Road".
Earlier stuff, not as good. Later stuff and solo efforts represent a decline.
Same with the Stones, Tom Petty, Steely Dan, Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, Boz Scaggs and most of the classic rock dinosaurs I can think of sitting here at my desk.
