Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

I said it once and I'll say it again. . .

Some folks seem to be awe-struck by improvisation. But if you think of some of the classical performers who are known to improvise today, such as Gabriela Montero or Robert Levin, those performers are far from the most interesting interpreters. Frankly, I don't think there's a connection between improvisation and interpretive insight (or technical accomplishment for that matter).

I know it's not nice to speak ill of the dead - however, I once heard an improvisation by Joanna Harris. It was ridiculous - little snippits (many of which were "borrowed" from known classical works) strung together with no more artistry than that of the organist at the local pizza parlor. I'll take a pass.
