You and I are "natural" beings. Anything we come up with must be natural. But it must be understandable how the diatonic scales got their start and are so prominent. If you and I were blowing conch shells a tritone apart, we might be able to make some beautiful sounds, or we might be getting into some ugly grandstanding.
