It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

RE: Sound quality of Keith Jarret recordings?

I haven't had any complaints about cymbals but I must try listening to that when I play ECM discs over the next week or two.

Piano can vary but why is hard to say. I don't think it's ever bad but I'm not certain how much of the differences are due to different engineers and different studios/live venues plus the fact that each change in studio/venue will mean a different piano. Some studios/venues may even offer artists a piano choice. Different mic setups and instrument placement will affect things too.

Piano is hard to record and there's lots of reasons for a variation in piano sound on a given label, or even for the one artist on the same label.
