and with your keen ears, Tom B., I am sure you are familiar with these: 10 or so volumes of the master (Doremi, "Segovia and his Conteporaries"), intended to compare and contrast him with those who were also enjoying fine careers at the time. I managed to buy about 5 volumes and then they seemed to vanish; with the recent (for myself) advent of the i- net, maybe I'll complete the collection.
The end effect, in my VERY humble opinion, was to only show how much of a master of the game Segovia really was, compared to the others: the sound he pulled out of the 4 inner stings of the guitar in chordal passages, the clarity, the warmth, and his stately command of tempo. His "time" and sense of purpose, of forward motion, was to my ears beyond all others. And again, the way those "hidden" notes of the chord voiceings sang...
All that being said, Maria Anido's playing on Vol. 4 is striking. I have spent many happy hours listening to her. Women and the classical guitar (as you say), indeed...
I'll take all your rec's seriously- I've seen Azuma's playing on you tube, and loved it. Don't know why I haven't sought out her recordings, yet.
I'm not much of a "silver disc" fan myself (they are hard to photograph, for one. Sorry guys...). But I feel as if the 78 rpm transfers of Segovia onto CD are excellent (I've some early vinyl to compare), and I have dozens of them. Never had the oppurtunity to mention it before, but I share your (and everyone else's) passion for classical guitar.
Thanks,
