jimbill,
I have had about 30 years with harpsichords, built a couple of kits, and spent time in musuems all over the place trying them, but I don't have a particular missionary zeal- I'm a big fan of the Bach of Lipatti, Glenn Gould, Schiff, and Hewitt on piano, and like Bach on organ and clavichord as well.
There's no reason to "push" as people seem to have strong opinions of their own devising about historic keyboard instruments and resist being pushed into it if they don't like the instrument generally. I'm that way about accordion, most of the time I really don't like that sound, but then there's that fun tango stuff by Piazzolla,..every instrument can be great if used the right way. - Yes, I have "Romantic Zen Interludes of Peace for 40 Bagpipes and small Cannon".
At home, I keep a piano, harpsichord, clavichord, and synthesiser.
In the case of the Mozart Agagio and Fugue for two keyboards, in which Mozart consciously wanted a Bach-like quality, and used that great grinding counterpoint, harpsichords and the Kipnis and Dart recording especially seems perfect.
The Mozart A&F with strings also, but for me, the counterpoint is more exciting- and has more drive- with the harpsichords.
Cheers,
Bambi B
