It is in the realm of collective psychology. People have tendency to create fetishes and worship them. Musicians, politicians, royals, movie stars - it doesn't matter what they do and how as soon as they become objects of mass adoration.
Really good music often occurs away from cheering crowds. Its groundwork is being done by the countless devotees who keep finding something that has never been found before. Who don't agree that Beethoven or Chopin have been exhausted by scores of towering personalities of the past.
I have many favorite performers too, but I also have reservations about each and every one of them. It may be a matter of taste, but I much prefer hearing 10 different interpretations of a music piece to hearing one "best" interpretation 10 times.
