Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Salonen is on fire!!!

Saw him lead the L.A. Phil in Sibelius' Lemminkäinen Suite and he (and they) were red hot... electric! I don't know if announcing that he's stepping down has lifted some weight off of him but between last weeks transendent 3rd act of Tristan (still hoping beyond hope that I can score seat to tomorrow's full performnace) and this past Saturday's smokin' Sibelius he's on a roll.

Not only did he bring this to rousing, thrilling life (while, as usual, gracefully and beautifully guiding the softer parts) he looked really happy. At the end he ran over and hugged and kissed the English Horn player, Carolyn Hove (it's been quite a couple of weeks for her between Tristan and this) which is something I've never seen him do before.

This was an interesting piece to play in the midst of all the the Tristan hoopla over at WDCH these days but it turns out that the first of the 4 parts was originally to be the overture to a Sibelius opera. An opera that he scrapped after watching a particulalry special performance of Tristan.

The first part of the concert was a very nicely played - though no revelations - LVB violin concerto with Viktoria Mullova.

Can't wait 'til next year and EPS leading them through the Sibelius cycle.

Don't piss on my shoe and tell me it's raining.
