This one scares the socks off me (and my cat!) even though I know the thunderous drum thwacks are coming it's always a shock that it's so wild. I doubt my cat knows what's coming and she jumps off the couch and stares at the speakers ready to run..... Unfortunately, the rest of Hovhannes isn't as exciting as that one movement.Andy hits it on the nose with the Mercury reissues, try too the RCA Living Stereos. For Mercury, the Prokofiev Sythian Suite, and Firebird CDs are awesome with some pretty accessible music to boot.
What sort of music do you listen to now? I always recommend Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition (Ravel orchestration) for rock and rollers to get their feet wet in classical....I'm a vinyl junkie but I'm sure the Reiner on Living Stereo CD is a great transfer (the LP is superb).
