I concur with much of what has been said. I have several Klemperer Beethoven recordings on vinyl and the sound is a little below average for the period. However these are Angel pressings, and they were made in the US by capital, and generally much worse than EMI pressings made in Britain. The original masters might be pretty good, and the CDs much more faithful than the old Angel vinyl pressings. I would guess that they would be acceptable in terms of sound. As far as the performances are concerned, Klemperer is certainly one of the handful of truly great Beethoven interpreters of the last half century. His tempos are generally slow. He is the opposite of the Toscanini fast firey intensity school of thought. But he is not overly romantic a la Furtwanger. No self indulgence or indiosyncrasy. Utmost musicality and integrity. For many he is the greatest of all Beethoven conductors. Many who hate Karajan hold Klemperer in very high regard. His performances are intense, but it is the kind of intensity acheived through careful, controlled shaping of the long line and gradual building of climaxes. No one produces more gravitas in the Beethoven symphonies. I have heard a few Klemperer performances that might be called ponderous (the Schubert 9th comes to mind), but never in Beethoven. His recording of Fidelio is widely considered to be the best ever.
In short, his approach may or may not be to your liking. But they are unquestionably great performances. Go for them!
