Re: suggested classical recordings

I'm sorry to hear your records were destroyed.

"The few recordings I have on cd just don't sound good and are quite old, before folks got good at recording on cd."

Hmmm. I've got quite a number of early digitial CDs that sound quite good, some digital recordings Telarc, London, Philips, DG, Denon, Nimbus, and some reissues on London, Philips, DG. So early on, *some* people knew how to make good digital recordings.

But to answer your question.

Debussy -- For the orchestral works, it's hard to beat Dutoit and the Montreal SO on London, even though I still enjoy the old Ansermet recordings.

The Quartetto Italiano made an excellent analog recording of the String Quartet for Philips, available on CD, but there are others said to be excellent, too.

Vivaldi -- not much of a Vivaldi fan. Hate the Seasons.

Stravinsky -- Firebird Suite on with Shaw/ASO on Telarc. Also, Symphony of Psalms.

Tchaikovsky -- The Sleeping Beauty with Dorati/Concertgebouw Orch. and Nutcracker with the LSO are fine. I don't have Swan Lake on CD . . yet. I'm not a big Tchaikovsky fan, either, and my favorite recordings of his symphonies are mostly on LP. I rather like the Marin Alsop/Colorado SO recording of the 4th Symphony on Naxos, though the Penguin Guide doesn't; the recording is excellent.

Beethoven -- The old 1963 Karajan set of the symphonies is very good, although many prefer a somewhat more poetic Pastorale. It's cheap, too, and the sound is quite good. Many like the all digital Zinman/Zurich Tonhalle set, which I haven't heard. It's cheap, too, and I may well get one myself before too long.

The string quartets with the Quartetto Italiano are excellent analog recordings, reissued on CD by Philips.

Brahms -- For the symphonies, the best I know are old. I like Bruno Walter on Sony for Nos. 1, 2, and 3. His 4th is VG, too, but I prefer Fritz Reiner/Royal Philharmonic Orch. on Chesky. The sound on the Walter recordings is well balanced and the 4th with Reiner is very well recorded, despite its age.

The Penguin Guides can be very helpful
