For those awash in puzzlement, Walter Damrosch (d 1950) was the longtime conductor of the New York Symphony (which later merged with the NYPO, the new band calling itself the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra for many years thereafter) known for his Wagner interpretations. He was also a composer of some regard in his day.Damrosch was music director for Sarnoff's NBC network and taught classical music appreciation over the radio during school hours. The network even provided textbooks and study guides.
No, this is not a rib, it actually happened. Inconceivable in today's cultural climate, I realize. But true.
