such wonderful music in the "Hub of Culture".When I was a young child, my mother used to take us to the outdoor concerts given by the Pops at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade along the Charles River. Later, when I was a teenager, I used to sell newspapers before and after BSO and Pops concerts outside Symphony Hall on Huntington Ave. - a ten minute walk from our house. Since we had to hang around to sell the final editions after the concerts, kindly and compassionate ushers used to allow us to stand or sit in the back of the hall. Those were the glory days of the BSO with Serge Koussevitzky and Charles Munch at the podium. Most of their weekly concerts were also broadcast on the radio.
I am very pleased to hear that James Levine is once again restoring the BSO to its elite status in the world.
After listening to Gabriela Montero's two recent recordings, I can agree with you that her performance on some selections can be rather bland. But, on the whole, especially in her "Bach and Beyond" CD, I was pleasantly surprised by her improvisations.
