Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

I think the Gramophones review data base is very good value when it is working, mind.

But, IF you are interested at all in HIP approaches - because you just LIKE them - you should also try other sites and sources. IMO&E for coverage alone.

Eg. Only a few sites identify the Festetics set on HMU's Musique D'Abord (Bargain price) - as the more apt, and varied, you can hear Haydn grow in conversational and ensemble terms as well as development as valuably more important against the full price series with Coin among others. Better engineering too!

I would also recommend buying a recent Penguin guide and a few of the annual review books from the Gramophone. Public libraries are a great resource here in Canberra in Aussie as they have copies of earlier guides, Gram and Peng's, and CD collections with searchable data bases!

Personally, I still find guides which discuss several recordings very useful.

BBC Music Magazine by subscription, with a CD a month - usually very well engineered - and well played is very GOOD value.
