While Dutoit is one of my favorite conductors, the parts sampled on YouTube don't thrill me. Oddly enough, I don't care for her phrasing. Just to be sure, I listened to the opening of the first movement. To my way of thinking, this is why people refer to many of Tchaikovsky's works as old war horses. Dutoit's tempo is too slow to my ears. It sounds like a funeral march. Some may like it that way, but I find it takes the life out of the work.The opening of the 1st concerto is remarkably powerful and dynamic, but I have had the devil's own time finding a conductor and soloist who bring it to life. The beginning really needs to sing, but few manage to do that.
Yet, you might find my preferences unsettling and too hurried. That's why it's nice to have different interpretations of these great works. We all can find something we like. Well . . . at least some of us can keep looking.
Tchaikovsky's 1st with a bright tempo - anyone? CD number, please.
