Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Martha Argerich cancelled her BSO appearances. Turned out to be good news...

...although we all wish her a speedy recovery from her unsurprising and recurrent "exhaustion".

But as it happens, the vacancy was filled by 20-year-old Yuja Wang, who hasn't even completed her work at the Curtis. The concerto was changed from Beethoven to Tchaikowsky and I very nearly did not listen. Man was she good! I can't recollect hearing the piece done better.

Digression: here in town (well, Cambridge) we have a young violinist of the same age, Stefan Jackiw, who two weeks ago gave us the Beethoven concerto in a rendition that rose to the heights of the great Isolde Menges, which meant, it too was the best performance I'd ever heard live. Plus the Bach encore was perfection, technically but especially musically. Wonder if I should introduce these two young people?...

Charles Dutoit conducted a glorious Russian Easter Overture, with the orchestra in luminous form, and Stravinsky's Symphony in C, somewhat understated in my opinion, but then who am I? If the Bostoners did not already have the best living conductor, I'd agitate for Dutoit to assume the podium position.

Needless to say, I'll be listening to the Saturday concert as well.
