I used small sized moving boxes (purchased from the movers) lined with bubble wrap ("small bubble" kind...two layers all the way around the CDs to be placed in the boxes. If memory serves me, I used something like 30 boxes to store 4500 CDs: 150 per box. That's PLENTY in a single box. They get very heavy fast. At least 3 generous strips of packing tape in each direction on both the top and bottom seams. That is, put enough across the bottom of the box to reach up the SIDE of the box at each end at least 4 inches. I numbered the boxes as I went (1,2,3) so that I removed items from the upper left of my shelves FIRST to Box 1, moved down the leftmost case to Box 2, Box 3. I then went to my second case and worked top-to-bottom the same way. I had 10 cases total along the wall. So, wrap the CDs well, but remove and wrap them ORDERLY as well, with an eye towards "putting them back where they came from"...assuming you have any organization right now!:-) If thousands of CDs get out of order, it is AMAZING how long it could take to get them back where you want them.Start by purchasing a couple of small Moving Boxes first to test the weight, and determine whether you like the idea. I believe the boxes I used were 14x18x12tall. I put two rows across the bottom, an "internal layer" of bubble wrap on top, then another layer of CDs before folding the excess bubble wrap you should leave on all sides when lining the boxes back across the top to protect it.
Finally, write "Fragile" on several sides, note the "Top" and draw Up Arrows and -- most importantly -- hire a mover you can TRUST. Speak with him up front about how to "handle your things". I met and discussed my move with the OWNER OF THE COMPANY. I didn't dicker about the price for the interstate move. The owner "spoke to his guys". This was a BFD for me, and I did it right.
