Were John Adams or Barbara Higdon also represented in the concert or whatever it was you heard? Otherwise it's beyond me why you'd cite those two as representing the "somewhat empty sky" of contemporary composition. I know I find the modern and contemporary period of composition to be the most interesting, varied, and exciting of all, not that I expect everyone to see it that way. But those two composers don't even begin to suggest the entire firmament of today's work, not that I personally have anything against them. Mentioning those two to me, frankly, suggests that your exposure has been limited. Am I wrong?
