It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Ruslan & Lyudmila opera on DVD - DTS compressed sound unacceptable :-( But the Gergiev docos are fascinating.

Looked at half of Glinka "Ruslan & Lyudmila" - Gergiev on Philips B0000228-09 with friends last night.

Started off with DTS audio setting but the sound was relatively poor so I switched to stereo and it came alive. I've had similar experiences with DD5.1 and this has surprised me somewhat as the attention is divided between video and audio so I expected to be less critical. But compressed sound is just that, full stop.

As for the opera, well I would not wholeheartedly recommend this DVD. Gergiev is very enthusiastic about the recording enterprise (a first) in an interview on this 2 disc set and it certainly is a top production re staging etc. However it is a pretty static work which ultimately is boring. The SACD set by Pentatone is better sonically and really does not need the video for appreciation.

But the interview and documentaries re Gergiev are facinating. He is obsessive (in the nicest sense) about music but one wonders how long he can keep up the pace.

Do not criticise the idiots in this world - we need them as they make the rest of us look so much better :-)
