Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

This should be its own forum

This topic comes up so often that it deserves its own forum. Call it "Mapleshade Way," where everybody could decry/defend Mapleshade to their hearts' content.

FWIW, I have about a dozen Mapleshade recordings, and I almost never listen to any of them. I find the artistic quality to be generally lacking. And ironically, when the artistic quality is there (like IMO "Clifford Jordan Live at Ethel's") the recording "quality" actually gets in the way: frankly, I'd rather NOT hear the squeaky bass drum pedal.

I suspect that part of the adverse reaction to Mapleshade comes from the breathless quality of Pierre Sprey's catalog copy. Like Sony's infamous "Perfect Sound Forever" phrase, Sprey's prose sets up unreasonable expectations. Maybe he should market Mapleshade as just an interesting independent label rather than as some amazing sonic breakthrough.

I also note that a few months ago one of the inmates (I forget who and I'm too lazy to check) raised some very disquieting concerns about Mapleshade's financial dealings with artists. If these allegations are true (and I have no basis to doubt them), then we should all think very carefully about continuing to patronize Mapleshade, not matter how good the recordings might be.
