Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Anyone else a bit disappointed with Mapleshade?

I just received the Spring 2007 Mapleshade catalog and was reminded of the mixed feelings I had after ordering a few of their highly self-touted cds. One recording in particular (Red Wine Trio: Baby Won't You Please Come Home) was downright terrible. Instruments drop out when they shouldn't, static occasionally drowns out the performers, and pops and clicks abound through the recording destroying an otherwise nice performance. I was also not so excited about Harold Ashby's Just for You. The performance was very good, but the recording was bad enough that I gave the cd away.

This is not to say that all their recordings are subpar. They did a nice job with Drink Small's Electric Blues Doctor Live! That recording suffers from problems here and there as well (possibly because of the challenges associated with it being live), but parts of the cd sound VERY clear and alive.

Any thoughts from those who own a few Mapleshade cds? Personally, I feel they fall WELL short of their claim of being "an almost-mythical haven for music" as their quality seems to vary greatly from one recording to the next.
