is right, and I'd probably go with Backhaus. However, Solomon and Schnabel are giants, too, from the early to mid-century.
For a brilliant assortment of pianists, featuring many considered the greatest of all time... look at the line-up in the Andante compilation. I have the Schumann issue and it's brilliant.
