I did a Pops recording about 10 years ago and I stopped counting mics after I reached the mid-30s.Balance was not an issue in that session. That's done later with only two guys on the clock.
Our union recording rates--actually it's the work rules as much as the rates--are why there are more new recordings of Eastern European orchestras than domestic ones.
Furthermore, most audiophiles don't realize or recognize that most recording executives wouldn't know good sound if it came up and bit them on the ass, nor is good sound even a goal of their endeavors.
