Soundmind,For a long time, I think the Katsaris set was the only complete set of the Liszt trans. of the B. Symphs. It's been awhile, but I remember those were very intelligently done, though if memory serves the Telarc sound (from that period) is a bit harsh.
The "Grosse Fuge" to me is one of the greatest pieces- perhaps the most arhcitecturally conceived and brilliantly innovative- rhythms and textures like that wouldn't appear again until Prokofiev. I really like all B.'s late contrapunctal stuff- all those fugey endings and passages.
I estimate I have albout 3000LPs and that number occupies about 32 lineal feet of shelving. My largest collections would be piano, followed by organ then chamber, esp. quartets.
Cheers,
Bambi B
