It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Re:

For years I touted the qualitative superiority of jazz over all other forms of music. It took comments much like what is in your post to bring my immaturity to my attention and knock some sense into my head. I pity those who feel they must compare Brian Wilson's contributions to Beethoven's in order to judge its merits. I pity those that feel that technical prowess and complexity are absolute requirements for the making of powerful compelling music. I CAN pity them because I've been on both sides of that fence. Qualitative differences are in the minds of the listener... where they belong. Certainly arguments can be made for one artist over another in some capacity or other (such as Clifford Brown being a more technically adept trumpeter than Miles) and they are interesting fodder for discussion... nothing more, IMHO - because as you pointed out, such discussions ignore Miles' compositional skills.

I recall an audio mag that compared Beethoven with Mahler and proclaimed the latter a superior symphonist. I would expect there to be as many disagreements as agreements and, alas, there is no definitive source we can go to for the answer.

>If you really want to insist that there are qualitative differences, then I'll ask you, who exactly is going to make the sorts of judgments that we all must accept?<

We seem to have a poster or two around here that have placed that burden upon themselves. If they could speak with any sort of intelligence about any music other than classical, it might be interesting to read their ideas. As it stands, it's just another example of wanna-be elitism with no basis in knowledge... the same as I exhibited 20 years ago.

I'll stick with my personal preferences, thanks. At least they make sense to me and I don't have to concern myself with someone else's idea of qualitative superiority, thereby forcing myself to listen to music I find distasteful. :)
