Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

New to Jazz, discovering some gems!

Well, I've been doing the "Jazz thing" for about a year now and have discovered quite a world of music worth exploring. Some of my purchases I've made as a result of recommendations from this board and for that I give a hardy "thank you".

My latest purchase, Dexter Gordon's "Go" is awsome.

Currently spinning, Coltrain's "Blue Train"

I just put Mingus's "Ah Um" back in the CD rack, what a great disk.

And I simply must get more Dave Brubeck. "Time Out" really speaks to me and his live "Jazz at Oberlin" is fantastic.

Some disks which've recently made their way through my player that probably aren't considered standard jazz fare, but which I do enjoy:

Al DiMaola, Paco DeLuca, John McLaughlin "Guitar Trio"
Frank Zappa "Hot Rats"
Maceo Parker "Planet Groove".

I was hesitant for a long time to get in to Jazz, worried I'd end up buying a bunch of Kenny G wannabe Jazz-lite losers, or wildly a-tonal free Jazz crack heads. I've found though that, so long as you stick with the classics, you really can't go too far wrong.

So, who are some of the modern performers I should look in to? Its been quite a learning experience for me so far. I've listened to classical for a long time and now Jazz is a whole 'nother world.
