Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

The 10 discs that changed the way you listen

Using any genre that qualifies here (rock, metal, blues, noise, etc), what are the 10 records that most shaped the way you listen to music today? These could be from any point in your life. Mine are, in no particular order:

1) Meet The Beatles - Beatles. I heard this when it was new as a kid and I was instantly hooked. Most of it sounds as fresh today as it did then.
2) Evol - Sonic Youth. Glenn Branca with vocals? Pretty scary stuff! I bought "Confusion is Sex" the very next day.
3) Symphony # 1 (Tonal Plexus) - Glenn Branca. This disc hits hard and it hurts!
4) The Golden Palominos - Golden Palominos. Their first disc which arguably could be called jazz. John Zorn, Arto Lindsay and company give an assault on jazz, rock, punk and funk. My favorite listing of one of the players is David Moss on "Non-rythmic percussion". :)
5) Loaded - Velvet Underground. I was a late bloomer on this great band.
6) 1830 - Merzbow. Huh??? Still trying to figure it out but somehow it works and it's enjoyable. Noise to get rid of that final stubborn houseguest.
7) Ummagumma - Pink Floyd. I bought this when it was current. I was too young to really understand psychedelia but it definitely shaped my future listening.
8) Raw Power - Stooges. Still one of the few "perfect" rock records in captivity.
9) The Doors - Doors. A cleaned up version before Wal-mart came into existence. Just a great record and very important to my (at the time) young ears.
10) Life is Peachy - Korn. Most metal artists have stage personas that I would call "acts" of craziness. Jonathan Davis has me convinced that he is a half step away from the rubber room.
