wtfm,Yes, the Schumann quintets are some of my favourite works of his.
Thornhill as usual has solid suggestions and I thank him for reminding me of the Shostakovich- not often heard and not often matched in intensity and inventiveness. Nice!
I would add a piece that I never tire of- Schubert's Quintet in A maj D.667, known as The Trout Quintet", so called because one of the themes is the melody from Schubert's big Leider hit, "Die Fiorelle" or "The Trout".
This has piano, violin, viola, cello, and this was an unusual choice - a double bass.
An extremely rich peice, the piano and double bass make it seem larger scael than it is sometimes and then it is so achingly intimate and sublime elsewhere- it's a piece that has everything- drama and comedy, dark melancholy and entertaining memorable tunes to hum on the way to work. A don't miss quintet- and more classical than romantic.
As the pieno part is so important, find a performance with a good pianist. I think Brendel has a couple of versions with different ensembles.
Cheers,
Bambi B
