Brahms is one of my favorite composers. Absolutely brilliant, poetic and powerful music. That statement/sentiment, however, that he DID express from what I've read (it's the reason he didn't publish his first symphony until he was, like, 40) has always bugged me. Looking at the subsequent 125 years or so after it, the view appears to be, at least, quaint, and perhaps even a little narrow-minded. Perhaps it reflected the undue influence of Vienna. For heaven's sake Brahms, THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!!!:-)
