No doubt that Furtwangler was a great conductor, but I've never liked his late romantic take of Beethoven -- Beethoven shouldn't be played like Wagner. IMO, there is more to be gained from the clarity and detail Szell offers (as well as finer playing). I wouldn't say Furtwangler is overrated, but he has unrightfully become a mythic character because of the surreal circumstances of conducting for the Nazis while they were losing the war. Because of this, suddenly everything is deeply profound with all sorts of hidden layers of internal struggle.
