I think it always helps to look backward before you look forward. As several people have noted the Relaxin', Steamin', Workin', Cookin' recordings from 1956 are classic Miles. To provide a bit more context you might also want to listen to the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet and the Kenny Dorham/Hank Mobley version of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers from the same period.
