I mean, wasn't Loren Maazel about ready to be stuffed? Failed in Cleveland, then in Pittsburgh. What did the NY Philharmonic board see or hear? And I own a couple of his recordings, including one of the most wrong-headed interpretations of the Rite of Spring in the market. The symphony boards choose these dinosaurs, then wonder why no one under 60 shows up? The clue meter is reading 0.
This not a blanket condemnation of older conductors, who can remain vibrant interpreters. But there seems to also be a list of the usual suspects, much like the baseball managers, fired many times without distinction, who always show up on the short list when there is a vacancy.
