Re: I´d dare say Robert Schumann´s symphonies...

As I said, I heard a definitive Schumann One sometime about 1983 with the Cleveland Orchestra. If you know of anyone who has subscription schedules for 1982 through 1984 at Severance Hall, if you see one weekend with the Schumann One, see who conducted it. (It may have been Andrew or Colin Davis, but I really don't remember.) Christoph von Dohnanyi, in like the second concert of his first full season with Cleveland (1984) did a definitive Schumann Two.

Too bad the Cleveland Orchestra never did a commercial recording of the Schumann symphonies between 1965 and 1985, when it had that fabulous "Cleveland" sound. (Szell's recordings were before that period, Dohnanyi's were after. And I don't think Maazel did Schumann with Cleveland.) IMO, the times I've heard Schumann live or on broadcast within that time period, there was nothing like listening to Schumann with that "Cleveland" sound. Even when the conductor did not necessarily nail it interpretively.
