Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Re: Norah Jones Does It Again!

Along with some others I had ordered from Amazon, this disc was waiting for me when I returned from a long weekend.

My initial feeling about it after one play is that it moves further into the "country" direction that was evident with "Come Away."

The good and the bad about this disc is that the success of "Come Away" has given NJ the commercial ability to record a disc that she and her band want, without regard to anyone else. The bad part of this, IMHO, is that most of the tunes were written by NJ and her band members . . . and they're just not all that good. NJ and her band have one groove that they feel comfortable in . . . and that groove can get a little tired. The good part is that the arrangements are carefully and nicely done.

The most interesting cut -- and, IMHO, far and away the best --- is the Duke Ellington tune to which NJ wrote the lyrics and it features just NJ playing the piano and singing. My personal wish would be for NJ to turn away from the limited opportunities offered by the country music form and to stretch out into the broader possibilities offered by jazz.

What made the first disc attractive was the fresh voice that she brought to a lot of songs that we had heard before, and that's what I'd like to hear more of.

As an aside, when people say, about an attractive female singer, "you've got to see the video!" warning signs go up in my head.

Except for the fact that they are both physically attractive and play the piano, I don't see the comparison with Diana Krall as apt. Diana Krall has no distinctive "voice"; she sounds like an attempt to imitate some of the great female jazz singers who lacks any apparent understanding of how their vocal mannerisms correlate to the words and music that they are singing. The "Live in Paris" CD I have listened to only once. At least "Feels Like Home" is something that I want to listen to again.
