RE: The genius of Freddy Hubbard

No matter who you are, there is always someone somewhere who is "better" than you, at least in terms of chops, but that doesn't really say much about your value as an artist. For another example, there are many pianists "better" than Thelonious Monk in terms of conventional markers of learned technique, but none of them are better at being Monk than Monk himself, and few are anywhere as deep an artist.
