Home Jazz Alley

From Louis Armstrong to Charlie Parker to the new greats of today, this is the place for Jazz!

My recollections of Billy Hart

Some time in the late 1970s I played bass in a rehearsal set up by a jazz friend in London in which he had invited Billy and the pianist with the band that was playing Ronnie Scotts at the time.

I have never before or since played with any drummer that made me feel so good - there was something magical about it, as if one could do no wrong.
Uncanny....

Later that evening we went into Ronnie's to hear the band. Billy was in the reception having some fun talking with the rest of the band. They were all kidding him. Like "Hey, Billy, how come you so hot? You've played with Herbie, Wayne Shorter, Zawinul, Tyner, Jimmy Smith and all those guys. What you got that makes you so hot?

Billy smiled and said "They tell me I make them feel good".

I know instantly exactly what he meant!
