Home Jazz Alley

From Louis Armstrong to Charlie Parker to the new greats of today, this is the place for Jazz!

Speed is your criteria?

Pretty hard to find jazzers who haven't played fast. This holds true for guys like Clark Terry, Django, Dick Hyman, Barney Bigard, Paul Gonsalves as well as 'Trane/Rollins/Hubbard/McGlaughlin/Hancock/Tyner and damn near everybody else. I doubt you'd dismissively categorize any of those players as "speed merchants".

Emmanuel is a helluva guitarist. IMO it would have been more sensible just to say you don't care for the cut the OP linked. I'm not crazy about it either, mainly 'cause that tune has been played a billion times and its kinda hackneyed. Speed is hardly the only thing Emmanuel is capable of, as my link displays. Yep, its another tune that's been played a billion times but it shows another side of Emmanuel and his harmonies are very nice.

Anyway, it ain't speed or lack thereof that matters most, its the content of the lines and the emotion that comes across no matter at what speed.
