Jeez, I'm 6 years late in buying this. I've only listened to about half of this cd so far. Its some of the most interesting music I've heard for a while and the playing by all is really excellent. REALLY excellent. Pretty intense and dense music. Very hip writing, unique.Rather than "melody" there are long, subtly changing intervallic lines, unexpected pops and backgrounds, interesting orchestration. Odd meters as well as rhythmic manipulation of 4/4. Sometimes I wish there was a bit more rhythmic variety in the lines rather than so many 1/8 notes, but there is some.
I needed a break from listening halfway thru. Its music that demands full attention if ya wanna really GET all of what's going on. I'm impressed by Coleman. Hell of an ensemble, 21 musicians IIRC. I have one of Coleman's other cd's. I like it, but this one is more interesting. I gotta check out his newer recordings.
