I could guess before I looked it up the drummer in question was Han Bennink, then as now the premier drummer in the Netherlands and a foundational figure in the European jazz avant-garde. I think it is important to recognize that the Europeans in many cases have a very different aesthetic--one in which the give and take of "play" the moves towards a resolution that forms a coherent whole is not the method or the goal. Rather the purpose is "deconstruction" and decentering and the method is one of provocation. And Han is a provocateur of the first order, and one who is not afraid to play the fool or the comic foil if the occasion calls for it as anyone who has had the privilege of seeing the ICP can attest. I have heard Han many times in what are often called "out" settings, and none of these times would I call him an accompanist or a role player but always a protagonist.
