well, yeah, that was a new language to begin that he pretty much devised and needed to explore (with a nod to John Gilmore).
Check out Ballads on impulse.
Also, there are some "peaceful/gentle side of" John Coltrane comps that focus on his ballads.
That side of him really was beautiful.
