Always interesting how tastes vary and how subjective the topic is. I have always felt that Jacki Maclean, as great a Jazz player as he was, had one of the ugliest alto tones. Very rough around the eyes and terrible intonation, which is hard to separate from tone.
Surprised there has been no mention of the great Michael Brecker. Great tone. Other great tones not already mentioned: Bob Berg, Stanley Turrentine, Phil Woods, Gene Quill, Pepper Adams, Ronnie Cuber, Miguel Zenon.
