As a bass player I was of an era where Jaco was a big influence, and I duly went fretless for several years.
But if there's one bass player I studied and tried to learn from it was Paul. His timing, his choice of notes - he was truly creative within his genre but not in a showy way but a subtle way. I found him "mysterious". How did he choose his notes? They weren't obvious but yet they were so simple and effective. I'll never figure out how his head worked - he was something else.
A lot of my fellow bass players said exactly the same. They revered him and studied everything he played.
